Now that the spoiler-lovers are gone, let’s talk.
I love a wonderful Beauty and the Beast retelling and this met my standards and then some. If you also like them, you will also like Windsong by Stephanie E. Donohue.
As always, Sarah describes everything the perfect amount for me. Great world-building, amazing environment descriptions and the characters are amazing.
As I imagine the characters will continue evolving throught the series, I’m going to write down my thoughts on them
My thoughts on characters after one book
Feyre
Engaging from the start, her strength and determination enraptured me to keep her family fed and safe.
- I believe had she not been so desperate and scared of the Fae she wouldn’t have killed Andras.
Tamlin:
Lovely Beast. Really like their dynamic as a couple but I don’t know if they will be able to healthyly cope with their nightmares.
Lucien:
The grumpy jester, one of my favourite types of characters. He helps Feyre catch the Suriel and is always there for her even though he is a bit abrasive. I feel like they could be good friends.
After “meeting” his brothers I understand him a bit more.
Amarantha
Villain. I worry about where are the ring with Jurian’s eye and his finger bone are. What if even thought Tamlin teared her throat out somehow her essence is in those and she can come back.
Could she be Valg? She has no surname, just like you-know-who from Throne of Glass.
Nesta
I really disliked her at the beginning. I would have smacked her for the way she was leeching off Feyre. When Tamlin sends Feyre back, I wasn’t really surprised to learn the glamour didn’t work on her our of her pure stubborness. Just like I wasn’t surprised when she was “Go get your man”, I was like “Yeeeeees!!!”.
I can’t wait to see how she evolves throughout the series.
Elain
So dull. Like a little doll. I hope but don’t expect her to grow. Their father is the same.
Rhysand
“Were you waiting for me? (insert smirk)” it’s something he would say in this situation.
I’m gonna be honest and admit I don’t know what to think about him. At first I thought he was interested in Feyre, then I thought he was pulling her pigtails Under the Mountain instead of in kindergarten. And at the end, he doesn’t pull through with that deal (at the moment). Is he amassing the weeks?
I can’t wait to see what unhinged thing he does next.
The Suriel
Maybe I’m crazy because I really liked his creepy ass. I feel like he would be best friends with Mort from Throne of Glass, one of the most underrated characters ever.
Favourite Moments
Feyre following the pucca out
After running into the Bogge in the forest, she sees her father, who couldn’t a few miles to town to sell his carvings, more than three days away from home (minimum). I was like “Nope, go back to your bed NOW”
indert danger GIF. Tamlin catches her and shows her the truth.
I laugh like a hyena every time I think about when she discovers she had an audience at that moment.
Feyre becoming High Fae
When all the High Lords share their blood to turn Feyre into High Fae because she saved them all from crazy Amarantha. That moment is amazing. The way you can know where each High Lord is from before she even says it chef kiss
Two moments I didn’t actually like but that I will remember for a long time:
- When Tamlin brings that poor Summer Court faerie to heal him after Amarantha took his wings. I bawled along Feyre, the way she tried to make his passing easier.
- When she’s near death but gives the answer to Amarantha’s riddle. The way it’s written makes the reader able to understand it at the same time.
I read Throne of Glass as it came out and I know this is not all Sarah J Maas is capable of. I feel like this is a good start to another soul-shaking series.
